Card 36: Withholding Belongings as Control

Your Freedom: Is this punishment?

A safety card. If what you feel is fear of what they will do next, this is not a card to decode alone. Get safe first: the Resources page has people you can reach right now.

Once Upon a Time: The Golden Key

A boy finds a golden key in the snow. He digs and finds an iron chest. He searches for the lock, finds it, fits the key, begins to turn. The story ends there. We must wait until the chest is opened to learn what’s inside.

We never find out. The story just... stops.

This is what it feels like when they hold your belongings hostage. The thing you need (your clothes, your books, your grandmother’s ring) is in the chest. They have the key. They keep almost opening it. “I’ll send it soon.” “Come get it anytime.” “I forgot, I’ll do it this week.”

They’re not keeping your things because they want them. They’re keeping the story from ending. As long as you’re waiting for the chest to open, you’re still in the narrative. Still connected. Still hoping.

The Decoder: Sometimes the treasure in the chest isn’t worth the price of staying in the story.

The Pattern: Using your possessions as leverage

What They Say/Do:

  • After separation, they won’t return your things
  • They make excuses, delay, create complications
  • Getting your belongings back becomes ongoing negotiation

What the Pattern Usually Does: Your possessions have become leverage. As long as they have something of yours, they have a reason to stay in contact.

How It Hooks You: You need your things. You keep reaching out. Each interaction gives them another opportunity to manipulate or re-engage you.

Your Power Move: Decide what’s worth the engagement. For valuable items, use a third party (friend, courier, mediator). For lower-value items, consider whether peace outweighs the object’s worth. Don’t let possessions become chains.

This is a safety card, because it arrives around leaving, when the risk is highest. If getting your things back means going back, do not go alone, and do not go by an arrangement only they know about. A domestic violence advocate can help you plan a safe way to collect them.
