The Decoder Cards

Every pattern, by what it goes after

Each card names one pattern: what it looks like, what it's actually doing underneath, and the move that gets you out of it. There are 70+ of them, open to everyone, and the deck is still growing. Pull one when something feels off and you can't yet say why, or carry one into a hard conversation.

Every card belongs to one of five families, sorted by what the move is going after. You don't need to know the name of a pattern to find it. You only need to notice what it's costing you.

The order, in the moment

  1. 1Safe

Am I safe right now? If what you feel is fear of what they will do next, get safe first.

  2. 2Wolf

Card 0, the Wolf Test: is this wool or fur?

  3. 3Family

What is the move going after? Each family asks one question.

  4. 4Card

Then the card: the pattern by name, and the move that gets you out of it.

Card 0 · above all five families

Start here: the Wolf Test

The master card. Every other card in the deck is a variation of it, a different disguise for the same move. One question decides whether what you're looking at is wool or fur.

Your Reality

Is this about my perception?

It often feels like fog, and checking your own memory against theirs.

What holds for every card here: "I know what I experienced." You do not need them to agree with what happened for it to have happened. Write it down for yourself, not to prove it to them.

14 cards

Your Feelings

Is this emotional leverage?

It often feels like guilt from nowhere, and the urge to fix their mood.

What holds for every card here: notice the feeling you were handed, and set it down before you act on it. Guilt, alarm and pity each arrive with a job attached. You can care how they feel and still decline the job.

12 cards

Your Bond

Is this relational manipulation?

It often feels like waiting for the good version to come back.

What holds for every card here: watch the pattern, not the moments. Warmth that has to be earned, or that comes and goes on no schedule you can learn, is being used to keep you. Real care shows up in conflict too, and it does not have to be won back.

17 cards

Your Freedom

Is this punishment?

It often feels like eggshells. Checking their mood before you move, spend, rest or speak.

What holds for every card here: say what you are doing once. Do not explain it. Do it. Leave the room if it escalates. And for a safety card there is no line at all: what you do is get safe, then call, then plan with someone.

18 cards

Your Self

Is this an attack on who I am?

It often feels like taking up less room, and losing touch with the people and things that were yours.

What holds for every card here: keep what was yours before them, your people, your work, your body, your attention, and go back to it on purpose. You do not have to defend who you are to keep being it.
