Once Upon a Time: The Trojan Horse

The Greeks can’t breach Troy’s walls. So they build a gift: a giant wooden horse. “We surrender! Here’s an offering!” The Trojans, moved by this gesture of defeat, bring the horse inside the city. That night, Greek soldiers emerge from its belly and open the gates.

The vulnerability was the weapon. The “I give up” was the strategy. The openness was the trap.

This is strategic vulnerability. “I’m being so honest with you right now.” “I’ve never told anyone this.” “I’m really putting myself out there.” The confession that makes you soften. The tears that stop the accountability conversation. The revelation that arrives exactly when they need you to drop your guard.

Real vulnerability invites connection. Strategic vulnerability manipulates it.

• Crying or showing emotion to stop accountability conversations

• Using past trauma to explain current harmful behavior

What the Pattern Usually Does: Vulnerability is being weaponized. Real vulnerability invites connection; strategic vulnerability creates obligation or deflection.

How It Hooks You: You feel special for being trusted. You feel obligated to match their openness. You soften your boundaries because they’re “being real.”

Your Power Move: Real vulnerability doesn’t come with an agenda. Notice whether their openness creates connection or obligation.
