The Decoder Cards · Your Feelings
Card 6: Shame Inversion
Your Feelings: Is this emotional leverage?
The Pattern: Making you feel ashamed of their behavior
What They Say/Do:
- “I feel bad for you”
- “You’re too sensitive”
- “I worry about you”
- “That’s a you problem”
- “You should really work on that”
- “Most people wouldn’t react that way”
What the Pattern Usually Does:
Their shame is intolerable to them, so they deposit it in you. By positioning you as the one with the problem, they offload their own discomfort. The shame they should feel for their behavior becomes shame you feel for your reactions.
How It Hooks You:
You start to believe you really are the problem. You work harder on yourself while they change nothing. You apologize for having feelings about their treatment of you. You feel broken.
Your Power Move:
Internal mantra: “I return this shame to its source.”
Out loud: “I don’t experience myself that way, but thank you for your concern.”
You are not responsible for carrying their disowned emotions.
