Card 12: Selective Idealization
Your Bond: Is this relational manipulation?
The Pattern: Making you “special” to separate you from others
What They Say/Do:
- “You’re not like other women.”
- “Finally, someone who understands me.”
- “You’re the only one I can talk to.”
- “Everyone else is so [negative trait], but you’re different.”
What the Pattern Usually Does:
They’re separating you from your natural allies by making you “special.” This idealization feels intoxicating, but it comes with an implicit threat: if you stop being special, you become like “everyone else” (who they clearly despise).
How It Hooks You:
You work to maintain your special status. You distance yourself from friends they’ve criticized. You compete for a position that requires constant performance.
Your Power Move:
Watch for the moment you get reclassified from “special” to “just like everyone else.” That’s the devaluation phase beginning.
Remember: Anyone who needs to trash others to compliment you will eventually trash you to someone new.
