Once Upon a Time: The Spider and the Fly

“Will you walk into my parlor?” said the Spider to the Fly. “’Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you did spy. The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,” and he has many curious things to show her there.

The Fly declines. She knows what happens to those who go up that stair. He offers her a bed; she declines that too. He offers her his pantry; she has heard what’s in his pantry, she says, and she does not wish to see. But the Spider is patient. He flatters her wings, her eyes, her wisdom. She thanks him and flies off. He doesn’t rush. He doesn’t grab. He goes home and spins his web in a quiet corner, and he waits, because he knows she will come back.

Eventually, the Fly comes closer, just to hear more compliments, and the Spider catches her.

This is the long game. Not the aggressive predator who lunges. The patient one who waits at the center of the web. Who knows that if they’re charming enough, long enough, you’ll eventually take one step too many.
