Once Upon a Time: The Frog Prince

A princess drops her golden ball into a well. A frog retrieves it, for a promise. “Let me eat from your plate, sleep on your pillow, be your companion.” She agrees. She has no intention of keeping the promise.

The frog follows her home, demanding what was promised. In some versions, she kisses him and he transforms. In older versions, she throws him against a wall in disgust, and that’s what breaks the spell. Either way, the frog becomes a prince.

This is future faking in reverse, but the structure is the same. “Do this now, and something magical will happen later.” “Kiss me and I’ll become who you really want.” “Stay with me and I’ll transform.” The promise of transformation is always just out of reach. The potential is always more compelling than the reality.

Some frogs never become princes. Some stay frogs forever, demanding you keep kissing them, keep waiting, keep believing the transformation is coming.

The Decoder: You can’t love someone into becoming who they promised to be. Judge by who they are now.

The Pattern: Promising a future that never comes

What They Say/Do:

• Grandiose promises about the future
• “When we get married...”
• “After I get this promotion...”
• “Things will be different when...”
• Plans that never materialize

What the Pattern Usually Does: They’re borrowing against a future they don’t intend to deliver. The promise keeps you invested without them having to change anything now.

How It Hooks You: You stay for the potential. You sacrifice present needs for future promises. You invest based on who they say they’ll become, not who they are.

Your Power Move: Judge by patterns, not promises. “I notice you’ve said that before. What’s different this time?” Watch what they do, not what they say they’ll do.
