Card 15: Conditional Affection

Your Bond: Is this relational manipulation?

The Pattern: Love as a reward system

What They Say/Do:

  • Warmth and affection appear only after you apologize, comply, perform, or submit
  • The “good version” of them is available only when you’ve earned it
  • Love is a reward, not a baseline
  • “I’ll be affectionate when you can be civil”

What the Pattern Usually Does:

Affection is being used as operant conditioning. You’re trained, like a lab animal, to associate compliance with reward. Over time, you stop expecting unconditional warmth, conditional feels normal.

How It Hooks You:

You work for love instead of resting in it. You lose sense of what baseline affection looks like. The intermittent reward, the occasional warmth, becomes addictive precisely because it’s unpredictable.

Your Power Move:

Notice when affection is conditional versus unconditional. Real love shows up even in conflict, even in disagreement. It doesn’t have to be earned.
