The Decoder Cards · Your Reality
Card 21: Weaponized Humor
Your Reality: Is this about my perception?
The Pattern: Hostility disguised as jokes
What They Say/Do:
- The cutting remark followed by “I’m just kidding.”
- The embarrassing story told in front of others “as a joke.”
- The nickname that stings.
- The laughter at your expense, then surprise that you’re hurt.
- “Can’t you take a joke?”
What the Pattern Usually Does:
Humor becomes a vehicle for hostility that can be instantly disavowed. If you object, you’re the one without a sense of humor. The mask of playfulness allows real aggression to pass unaddressed.
How It Hooks You:
You laugh along to avoid being the buzzkill. You doubt whether you’re being too sensitive. You let comments slide because “it was just a joke.” Meanwhile, the message lands: you’re ridiculous, mockable, not to be taken seriously.
Your Power Move:
“Jokes are funny for everyone, not just the person telling them. That one wasn’t funny to me.”
⏸️ PAUSE AND GROUND
Body Check: Notice where you’re holding tension. Shoulders? Jaw? Stomach? Take three slow breaths. Let your exhale be longer than your inhale.
Reality Check: If any of these tactics feel familiar, that recognition is valid. You’re not imagining things. You’re not being too sensitive. You’re seeing clearly.
Boundary Check: You can put this down anytime. Your healing isn’t a race. Come back when you’re ready.
