The Decoder Cards · Your Reality
Card 38: The "Huh?" Gaslight Loop
Your Reality: Is this about my perception?
Once Upon a Time: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
Alice says exactly what she means. The Hatter and the March Hare twist it into wordplay until she can’t get a straight answer. “Then you should say what you mean,” the March Hare tells her. “I do,” Alice replies, “at least, I mean what I say, that’s the same thing, you know.” “Not the same thing a bit!” says the Hatter.
Nothing at that table is actually confusing. Alice speaks plainly and gets handed a riddle in return, three times over, not because anyone failed to follow her, but because following her was never the plan. She leaves no better understood than when she sat down, having explained herself again and again to people who never intended to hear the first version.
The Decoder: When your clear sentence comes back as a puzzle, that’s not a comprehension gap, it’s a refusal wearing one.
The Pattern: Manufactured confusion
What They Say/Do:
- Repeated confusion responses when you express yourself clearly
- “Huh? What do you mean?”
- “That doesn’t make sense.”
- “I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
- “You’re not being clear.”
- Blank stares or dismissive sighs
What the Pattern Usually Does: Your way of expressing yourself is being framed as nonsensical. It’s not that they don’t understand; it’s that they don’t want to engage with what you actually said.
How It Hooks You: You try harder to be understood. You question your communication skills. You over-explain, giving them more material to twist.
Your Power Move: Don’t elaborate or re-explain. “I was clear. Let me know when you’re ready to engage with what I said.” Their confusion is their problem, not yours to solve.
“When someone pretends not to understand you, they’re refusing to meet you, not failing to grasp you.”
