Once Upon a Time: The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy follows the yellow brick road to find the great and powerful Oz. He does not help her. He sets her a price first: kill the Wicked Witch of the West, and then he will send her home. It is the price of an audience with a man who has nothing to give. She goes. She survives it, and not by killing anyone on purpose: the Witch tricks her out of one of her silver shoes, Dorothy throws a bucket of water over her in a temper, and the Witch melts. Dorothy had no idea water could do that.

She comes back to collect what she was promised, and Oz tells her to come back tomorrow. Then Toto knocks over a screen in the corner. Behind it: a little old man, as surprised as she is, who has been making believe all along.

This is authority hijack. Someone positions themselves as the great and powerful interpreter of your life. They tell you what your feelings mean, what your dreams signify, what your intuition is really saying. Their voice booms with certainty. Their answers feel absolute. You stop trusting yourself and start trusting the wizard.

But when the screen comes down, there’s just a person, no wiser than you, no more connected to truth, no more qualified to interpret your inner world. They just had better special effects.

The Decoder: Anyone who needs a screen is hiding something, and anyone who sets you a task before they’ll help you is buying time, not testing you. You don’t need a wizard, you have your own silver shoes.

The Pattern: Becoming the interpreter of your inner world

What They Say/Do:

• They tell you what your intuition means
• They interpret your dreams, feelings, experiences
• They position themselves as having greater spiritual insight
• “What you’re really feeling is...”
• “That’s your ego talking.”
• “You’re not spiritual enough to understand.”

What the Pattern Usually Does: Your inner authority is being colonized. By becoming the interpreter of your inner world, they insert themselves between you and your own truth.

How It Hooks You: You start deferring to their interpretation of your experience. You trust their reading of you more than your reading of you. Your spiritual life passes through them.

The “For Your Own Good” Variant: This doesn’t always come wrapped in spiritual language. Sometimes it’s just constant lecturing and correction, dressed as concern instead of diagnosis, he isn’t interpreting your dreams, he’s correcting your grammar, your parenting, your driving, your tone, positioning himself as the more evolved, more capable, more correct partner. “I’m just trying to help you be better.” “I only say this because I care about you.” The lecture never quite ends, because your growth is never quite finished, which conveniently keeps him permanently in the superior chair.

Your Power Move: “I appreciate your perspective, but I’m the authority on my own experience.” No one gets to tell you what you feel.
